I first learned this tune as a song once sung by my mother. The song was locally called ‘Mr. Maguire’ and songsters around the Castlebarnagh, Daingean area of Offaly sang it at threshings and wren boy performances. This hornpipe is old, if one is to judge by its title. Napoleon himself, as a military commander, outmaneuvered his opponents on one battlefield after another, and captured the imaginations of Irish musicians and songwriters.
