I often thought about O’Carolan traveling as he did on horseback along with his companion who carried his harp, both of them in all sorts of weather. The harper Arthur O’Neill describes how on such an occasion, he got the most uncommon wetting he ever experienced, saying, “I was shortly afterwards afflicted with such severe rheumatism that I lost power over two of my left-hand fingers”.
