The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
John Doherty was a very generous musician. He would sit and play for hours, stopping here and there for to explain a tune title or tell a story. Sometimes he’d have trouble recalling a particular tune and would be especially embarrassed if he couldn’t remember the beginning of a listener’s request. Late in the night, he’d remember the tune and play it. When finished, he’d remove his cap, and lift his glass, and looking up to the ceiling he’d exclaim: “Thanks be to God!”
