    The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance.     Make your donation go further: a donation of €250 or more in any tax year is worth an additional 44.93% to ITMA. So for €50 more, ITMA can claim an additional €112.33 tax back from revenue.

    Irish-based donors can see their donations augmented by the State through the CHY3 form, which makes any donation above €250 worth €362.33 towards ITMA’s archival work, at no additional cost to you.

    ITMA is eligible for 501(c)3 donations, so for potential donors based in the USA, donating to ITMA can be a tax efficient way of making more and more archival material accessible to remote users.

    I first heard this from the pipe playing of Leo Rowsome (1903-1970). It seems like I’ve known the tune forever. Its title reminds us of an old custom of a going away party for young people who left Ireland by boat at a time when their return home was very much in doubt. In some cases, they were never to be seen again. Their last night in Ireland was honored with a large gathering of people who would cry, sing, drink, make music and dance, and offer words of encouragement and final words of goodbye.
