The town of Athlone is divided by the river Shannon, which flows between Counties Roscommon and Westmeath. The town embraces the provinces of Connacht and Leinster. It was a meeting point for travelers in the old days who would carry news about events in other parts of Ireland. I learned this jig from Co. Offaly accordionist Mick Lynam when we played together in the Ballinamere Céilí Band.
