To celebrate Josephine Keegan’s 90th birthday earlier this year ITMA are delighted to include this prolific composer in the Saothar series. Her compositions have been played for many years, and people regularly find out that a tune they thought was traditional was actually written by her. She has published four books of her compositions and her tunes feature on her own recordings including A few tunes ‘now and then’, Around and about and the two-disc publication The Keegan’s tunes : a selection of traditional Irish music composed by Josephine Keegan (2002). Josephine is both a fiddle player and a piano player and often accompanies herself by double-tracking her recordings. Her piano accompaniment to two tunes, ‘Best bib and tucker’ and ‘The greenfinch’ is included here, transcribed by Urszula Waszkiewicz.
She has also published four books of her compositions and a list of all of the compositions that appear in those books is available below, along with a biographical note. The 8 tunes selected here are just a very small sample of the at least 387 tunes that Josephine has composed and published. Included in that number are 1 barcarolle, 2 polkas, 3 strathspeys, 3 slip jigs, 6 marches, 7 barn dances, 12 waltzes, 23 airs, 86 hornpipes, 100 jigs, 144 reels.
