This month, we continue exploring Felix Dolan’s (1937-2013) private collection. A respected pianist and key figure in New York’s traditional Irish music scene, Felix was known for his expert accompaniment. With help from his son Brendan and longtime friend Brian Conway, we’ll highlight more from his collection in the coming months.
Last month we featured Felix’s many old musical friends from memorable musical occasions in New York, Boston and in Tipperary. On this occasion, we’ve chosen more tracks from these sessions with fiddle players Brian Conway, Andy McGann, (1928-2004), Martin Wynne (1916-1998), Rose Clancy and Kevin Killeen (piano accordion). Joe Madden (1938-2008), an accordionist and close friend of Felix, often performed with him at various Irish music and cultural events. In 1989, Felix recorded Joe’s daughter, Joanie Madden, at a St. Patrick’s Day event, highlighting her talent as Cherish the Ladies’ soloist and leader.
We also feature two more tracks from Paddy O’Brien (1922-1991), the acclaimed accordionist, recorded at a session in the Larkin house Garrykennedy with his daughter Eileen, Dan Larkin on fiddle, and Jody Larkin on piano.
Hope you’re having an enjoyable summer of music at sessions, festivals or fleadhs. I look forward to sharing more of ITMA collections, including Felix Dolan’s, in the coming months.
