The Irish Traditional Music Archive is committed to a sustainable future. This policy has been informed by the Arts Council Climate Action Programme and should be read in conjunction with ITMA’s Climate Action Plan
Introduction
The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to safeguarding Ireland’s rich musical heritage while embracing environmental sustainability and climate action. As a national cultural institution, we recognise our responsibility to contribute to a greener future and ensure that our operations reflect the values of sustainability, responsibility, and resilience.
Our Commitment to Climate Action
ITMA acknowledges the growing climate crisis and the role that every individual and organisation must play in addressing environmental challenges. As part of our commitment:
- We have established a Green Team comprising staff and Board members, led by our Sustainability Champion, Maeve Gebruers ([email protected]), to drive climate action within the organisation
- We have developed a Climate Action Plan that sets out measurable steps to reduce our environmental impact, with progress reports presented at each Board meeting
- We are integrating sustainability principles into our daily operations, ensuring that our archival and outreach activities align with best environmental practices.
Why Climate and Environmental Action Matters to ITMA
As the holders of the largest collection of Ireland’s traditional music, song and dance we are aware of the importance of heritage, continuity, and responsibility. Our commitment to climate action is motivated by:
- Our responsibility to future generations – ensuring that our cultural heritage thrives in a world that is environmentally secure
- Sustaining our operations – reducing energy consumption, improving efficiencies, and securing the long-term sustainability of ITMA
- Leveraging our influence – using our position as a national archive to encourage environmentally responsible practices across the cultural sector
- Aligning with national and global climate goals – contributing to Ireland’s 51% emissions reduction target by 2030 and the transition to net zero by 2050.
Key Areas of Focus
We recognise that our environmental impact spans multiple areas, and we have identified the following key priorities:
Sustainable Operations
- Work with the Office of Public Works (OPW) to enhance the sustainability of our building infrastructure
- Also with the OPW ensure that the proposed development of the mews building is carried out in a sustainable manner
- Improve energy efficiency within ITMA’s premises through LED lighting, sensor-based systems, and optimised heating and cooling
- Reduce water usage through monitoring and awareness initiatives.
Governance & Staff Engagement
- Integrate sustainability training into staff development and orientation
- Maintain regular reporting on sustainability progress to the ITMA Board
- Foster a workplace culture that prioritises sustainability in daily operations.
Travel & Events
- Prioritise sustainable travel options, including public transport and digital collaboration to minimise unnecessary travel
- Develop sustainable event guidelines that incorporate waste reduction and eco-conscious catering.
Digital Sustainability & Collections Management
