    The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance.     Make your donation go further: a donation of €250 or more in any tax year is worth an additional 44.93% to ITMA. So for €50 more, ITMA can claim an additional €112.33 tax back from revenue.

    Irish-based donors can see their donations augmented by the State through the CHY3 form, which makes any donation above €250 worth €362.33 towards ITMA’s archival work, at no additional cost to you.

    ITMA is eligible for 501(c)3 donations, so for potential donors based in the USA, donating to ITMA can be a tax efficient way of making more and more archival material accessible to remote users.

    Brian Boru was crowned as High King of Ireland at the beginning of the 11th century. He was assassinated while on his knees in his tent, thanking God for his victory in battle. He and his army had defeated the Norsemen at the Battle of Clontarf outside of Dublin. The assassination happened on Good Friday, 1014, when a Norwegian warrior entered his tent with an axe in hand. The tune is said to have been composed around the same time, and is widely played nowadays by pipe bands.
