The Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) is committed to providing free, universal access to the rich cultural tradition of Irish music, song and dance. If you’re able, we’d love for you to consider a donation. Any level of support will help us preserve and grow this tradition for future generations.
from Compositions by Hannah O’Brien
During my undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan I had the pleasure of meeting Mick Gavin (originally from County Clare) and Marty Somberg, two fiddle players that ran the local Ann Arbor session at Conor O’Neill’s pub every Sunday night. They were both so kind and welcoming, but my favorite part of the sessions would be when the music would lull, and the two would pull out a new waltz I’d never heard. The whole idea of waltzes in Irish music was new to me and I looked forward to these musical moments – I wrote this tune as a thank you for my time spent with them in Michigan.
