A Time at the Roche's

The Roche family house in Branch, St Mary’s Bay, was a popular spot to have a “time”—that is, a kitchen party. Friends and neighbours from Branch and around the Cape Shore gathered to sing songs, tell stories, dance, and socialise. As Aidan O’Hara stayed with Dermot and Rita Roche whenever he visited the Cape Shore, these were the occasions when he did most of his recording.

Compiled from a number of different “times,” the photographs in this gallery depict the faces of the singers, musicians, and storytellers whose voices are featured in A Grand Time—people like Henry Nash, Denis Nash, Frankie Nash, Albert Roche, Henry Campbell, and Gerald Campbell. They illustrate the multi-generational nature of these events, and paint a picture of intimate community gatherings featuring dance, music, drink, and song.
