John Mac Namara Collection May 2021

John Mac Namara (1942–2019) or 'Johnny Mac' as he was known in musical circles, played the accordion and was the leader of the original Castle Céilí Band formed in 1959 by pupils of Drimnagh Castle Christian Brothers School. Later on in February 1968, he became the founder and leader of the Green Linnet Céilí Band.

Johnny was a meticulous person who collected and amassed a significant collection of sound recordings during his lifetime. In May 2021 ITMA Director Liam O'Connor visited his Wicklow home to receive the donation of his archival collection from his widow Joan. ITMA sincerely thanks Joan, and John's family for placing these recordings in our care.

The Collection will be processed, digitised and catalogued in preparation for sharing with the traditional music community.
