Post of Digital Archivist at ITMA

A new position of Digital Archivist will arise in May 2021 to assist with the management and development of the organisation's Digital Repository (currently Arkivum Perpetua). This role will have an added layer of the IT management & development of ITMA’s suite of digital preservation tools.

The role requires an individual with strong IT skills, who would work closely with Archive colleagues to ensure the continued preservation and accessibility of ITMA’s extensive digital collections. The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of Archives & Digital Preservation principles and experience in the sector. Experience in sound engineering would be advantageous as a large percentage of the collections are audio in format.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop and refine workflows for complex digital migration;

Manage and develop tools to support our digital preservation service;

Implement new digital preservation workflows;

Collaborate on the creation of policies & procedures for managing digital materials for ingest, storage, preservation, organisation, description and access in accordance with international standards and best practices in digital preservation activities;

Establish digitisation work stations in line with best practice;

Plan, prioritise and review the processing of digital collections;

Work directly with digitisation staff to advise on workflows that will facilitate the transfer of digitised materials to ITMA’s digital repository;

Liaise with ITMA’s database and digital repository providers (currently Soutron & Arkivum);

Improve the on-site and external access to digital collections.

Reporting to ITMA’s Archivist, the post will be offered on a 2-year fixed-term contract. Salary will be within the range of €30,813 – €37,515 gross per annum. This full-time position will be based at ITMA, 73 Merrion Square, Dublin 2, Ireland.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in information science, archival science, or other relevant field;
  • Possess an established track record of managing a digital repository;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of digital preservation standards such as OAIS and Trustworthy Digital Repositories;
  • Demonstrate familiarity with data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials (EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS);
  • Demonstrate experience implementing digital preservation workflows;
  • Project management experience;
  • Knowledge of ISAD(G), and other archival descriptive standards;
  • Substantial experience of using sound recording and/or digital transfer equipment.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience working in an archival repository, including experience working with digital/born-digital archival material and experience in creating metadata descriptions, digitisation, and care of digital/born-digital materials.

Person specification

The following skills and experience would be an advantage:

  • Working knowledge of Archivematica and AtoM systems;
  • Knowledge of a wide range of computer storage media, file systems, software, and file formats;
  • Interest in Irish traditional music;
  • Musical literacy;
  • Audio/audio-visual digitisation experience;
  • Studio skills;
  • Fluency in the Irish language.
