Attention pay my countrymen and hear my latest news
Although my song is sorrowful I hope you'll me excuse

I left my native country a foreign land to see
And I bade farewell to Donegal likewise to Glenswilly.

It was on a summer's morning at the dawning of the day
I left my peaceful residence to wander far away
And as I viewed those grand old glens perhaps no more to see
And all happy times I spent around sweet Glenswilly.

Some stalwart men around me stood my comrades kind and true

And as I grasped each well known hand to bid a last adieu

Says I my native countrymen it’s soon you shall be free

To raise the sunburst proudly o’er the hills of Glenswilly.

No more I'll dance the Irish jig among the girls so gay
No more at balls or harvest homes my fiddle I shall play

My treasured harp I left behind the rest though it were dear to me
It will keep my place when I am gone far far from Glenswill.

No more beside the sycamore I'll hear the blackbird sing
No more for me the blithe cuckoo will welcome back the spring
No more I'll plow your fertile fields a chuisle geal mo chroí
On a foreign soil I'm doomed to toil far far from Glenswilly.

Goodbye God bless you Donegal my own dear native land

In dreams I often see your hills your towering mountains grand

But the last ten thousand miles does lie betwixt your hills and me

I'm a poor forlorn exile cast far far from Glenswilly.

May peace and sweet contentment reign around Lough Swilly’s shore
May discord never enter those homesteads any more
And may the time soon come around when I return to thee
And live as my forefathers lived and died in Glenswilly.
