Farewell my native countrymen and friends both one and all
My lot lies in America to either rise or fall
From my cabin I was evicted and then compelled to go
Aye and leave our sainted Ireland where the green shamrocks grow.

Now I owed the landlord two years rent I wished I owed him more
The day the bloody bailiff put a notice on my door
My weak and widowed mother it grieved her sore to go
Aye and leave the house my father built some sixty years ago.

Now she lingered for a little while, she fretted and she died
But the only consolation; she sleeps by father’s side
By night and day for them I pray, no matter where I roam
‘Til I return to Erin’s shore where the green shamrocks grow.

For it’s hard to part with those you love when in your heart you know
And leave the sod your father trod some sixty years ago.

If I get out to Americay and God spare me my heath
If fortune ever favours me I’ll be a man of wealth
I’ll save up my money back home to her I’ll go
And together we’ll live happy where the green shamrocks grow.

Hurray my boys the sails are set and the wind is blowing fair
We will steam for castle gardens in a few days we'll be here
With a bunch of blooming shamrocks St Patrick blessed of yore
We’ll be welcome in Americay with friends from Inishowen.
