The wreck of the number nine, song / Packie Doherty (Anton), singing in English

The dark stormy night not a star was in sight
The north wind came howling down the line
Stood a brave engineer with his sweetheart so dear
He got orders to follow number nine.

He whispered goodbye with a tear in his eye
The joy in his heart he could not hide
For all the whole world seemed bright when she told him that night
For tomorrow she would be his loving bride.

As the train moved along its wheels hummed a song
The black smoke went curling to the sky
The headlights beams seemed to brighten his dreams
For tomorrow when he would be coming back.

As he sped round the hill his stout heart stood still
The headlights were shining in his face
He murmured a prayer as he flew through the air
For he knew it to be his final race.

In a wreck he was found lying there on the ground
He asked them to lift his weary head
As his breath slowly went a message he sent
To a girl whom he thought she would be wed.

There's a little white home that I bought on my own
Where I dreamt we'd live happy on nigh
I will leave it to you for I know you will be true
‘Til we meet at the golden gates goodbye.
