Oh bright shone the light from the heaven’s on high
Not a cloud marred the light of the brilliant blue sky
There stood on a beach on the far distant shore
An exile from Ireland the land we adore

As he vacantly gazed far across the blue sea
When he thinks of the land that he longs to see free
And while he is thinking the time’s drawing nigh
When the big ship will take home back home for to die

Homewards once more homewards once more
And the good ship is speeding to Erin’s green shore
An exile returned no longer to roam
He will end his career in his dear native home

‘Twas for freedom he fought and for Ireland he bled
And for this he was sentenced to hang until dead
But the sentence was not carried out if you please
And for years he was banished for years o’er the sea

For twenty one years in the prime of his life
He was parted from kindred from home and from wife
And now as he stands on that far distant shore
Awaiting the steamer bound homewards once more

Well the scene has now changed and ship ploughs the seas
And the exile on board breathes the air pure and free
And as he sights the dear land of his love
Sure he murmurs a prayer to his maker above

With the deepest emotion and heart wildly true
And once more beholding his dear native hills
And as he descends from the ship to the shore
Thank god he explains I’m an exile no more

I’m homewards once more homewards once more
And the good ship has brought me to Erin’s green shore
An exile returned no longer to roam
He will end his career in his dear native home
