Derry streets, song / Joe Porter, singing in English

The sun did dawn so grey and cold on Derry’s empty streets
The buildings echoed one by one the sound of massed brown feet
But not a soul who prayed that day not woman man nor wain
Knew thirteen men would never walk on Derry’s streets again.

The people gathered silently to march to Guildhall Square
They came in peace to state their case among their own kind there
But butchers waited there for them with bullets blood and pain
And thirteen men would never walk on Derry’s streets again.

The tread of feet on Rossville Street was broken by the sound
Of armoured cars and rifle shots and death was all around
Some ran to tend the falling men by cowards they were slain
And honest men may dare to walk on Derry’s streets again.

Let England hang her head in shame for all the world to see
That day there was a massacre they called a victory
Let Ireland stand united now and speak her message plain
That honest men may dare to walk on Derry’s streets again
That thirteen men may dare to walk on Derry’s streets again.
