A dear spot in Ireland, song / Phil Doherty, singing in English

There’s a dear spot in Ireland that I long to see
‘Tis my own native birthplace sure it’s heaven to me
Where my feeble old mother she lived all alone
With my brothers and sister ‘twas once a bright happy home.

Sure we hadn’t much money but my old mother dear
On me gave a blessing filled my heart full of cheer
When the shadow of poverty darkened our door
I left Ireland and mother because we were poor.

Since leaving old Ireland my poor mother’s dead
May God bless and protect you were the last words she said
And the ring that my father gave her she gave me
It’s a far dearer blessing that bright gold could ever be.
