The catastrophe song, song / Jim McCarron, singing in English

I’ll sing of a sad catastrophe that occurred on the raging main
The front nine wheels of the tramway car broke the peddles of an express train
I stood on the deck where a brave ship sunk and I shifted her better or worse
And all that was left of the gallant crew was myself and the captain’s purse.

I loved a girl with all my heart and I hated her ten times more
She was six feet nothing in the her stocking soles and her height was five feet four
The hair on her head was down to her heels and was cut in the Cambridge style
Her voice was as sweet as the nightingale and as coarse as a narrow smile.

Her father was a bricklayer a labourer to trade and wrought in a jeweller’s shop
While climbing up the ladder with a handful of bricks he fell from the bottom to the top
He had a lameness in one his left right eyes and a deafness in one of his legs
He had a hot cold bath for his breakfast every night and a shower bath of hard boiled eggs.

This girl was awful beautiful and her face was as ugly as sin
She had a farmyard collop in the bottom of her throat and her nose hung o’er her chin
And she went and got married to a white black man and left me to die an old maid
And I made up my mind if I ever had a son I would send him to the dressmaking trade.
