Peter Laban ‑ within five miles of home

ITMA's photographer-in-residence 2021, Peter Laban, is not a Clare native but has spent many years living and working in the county. He is a piper and has perfomed with many Clare musicians, notably Kitty Linnane. He regularly attends musical events in his local area and has been quietly documenting Clare's musical life over the past two decades.

The photographs in this latest gallery were all taken within a five mile radius of his home. A selection from the gallery, along with Peter's own thoughts on the images are available below, while the gallery itself can be viewed in the Digital Library.

Bríd O'Donohue always organised a float for the students of her music school. These girls, all neighbours, were on it that year, looking suitable for the occasion.

There was an tribute event for the Cuil Aodha Choir In ómós do Chór Chúil Aodha. Here the two gentlemen were recalling their days with Ceoltóirí Chualann. Playing Ríl Mhór, among other things, but I distinctly remember that one.

Bill was over to launch his long awaited recording of Micho Russell's music. We had a great launch night at the Russell homestead in Doonagore and Bill called over to Miltown later that week. I told him I wanted a few pics, he jumped beside the statue of Willie and took a pose. We sadly lost him not long after.

Michael Mahony was a stalwart of the Miltown music community. He was a flute and whistle player, and a singer. That day a small afternoon concert was put on for the senior citizens. Michael Mahony and Michael Falsey played one half and Kitty Hayes and I played the other half.

One of the last surviving pupils of Pádraig O'Keeffe, Paddy was not an easy man to photograph in low light when playing. He would not sit still.

I had set aside this image some time ago to include in one of these galleries and was thinking about Michael when the news arrived he had died at the age of 92. Michael was one of the last living with a first hand experience of Johnny Doran. He enjoyed talking about that and often recalled he played 'against Johnny' as he put it at a whistle competition, and won. He also held a 'Johnny Doran cup', won at a piping competition. One of his treasured possessions. Here he was demonstrating how he saw Johnny playing the pipes standing up at the Miltown races.

The outdoor sessions around Antóin Mac Gabhann are a regular feature of any festival in Ireland where traditional musicians gather. Music just flows for hours and all comers join in. The Willie week of 2013 came with beautiful warn weather, badly needed after a winter where Atlantic storm after storm seemed to tear through the place. This particular session went on and on steps and half sets were danced, people came and went and came back again.
