Up half the night [comp. Carl Hession], reel

Up half the night [comp. Carl Hession], reel / Carl Hession, piano ; Bríd Harper, fiddle

This reel is the third tune in a set which begins with the jig A Trip to Culdaff. I wrote these three tunes after recording the Tom Byrne CD in Culdaff. I had a brilliant time in Inishowen and the music sessions continued definitely half the night!

The flying magpies [comp. Carl Hession], jig

The flying magpies [comp. Carl Hession], jig / Carl Hession, piano ; Kevin Crawford, flute

When I wrote the music for the Rhythm of the Dance in 1998, we had three ballet dancer included in the cast. One of their features was to dance the Slip Jig, and I thought this classical gigue would be very suitable.

Sporting Galway [comp. Carl Hession], reel

Sporting Galway [comp. Carl Hession], reel / Carl Hession, piano ; Haley Richardson, fiddle

When I was recording The Full Score CD, Frankie Gavin and myself decided we would compose a tune each – which we did. This reel was my contribution, although it was funkier and also had a string arrangement. It was easy to come up with the title – I come from Galway and I love sport!

Treaty County [comp. Carl Hession], hornpipe

Treaty County [comp. Carl Hession], hornpipe / Carl Hession, piano ; Maura O'Connor, concertina ; Bogdan Sofei, strings

As Maura is a Limerick lassie and has a big interest in Sliabh Luachra, I decided to write some Kerry music although this area borders Cork, Kerry and Limerick. I began the set with this hornpipe Treaty County which of course refers to Limerick. The final tune in the set is called A Clash of the Ash which this time is linked to the famous Limerick hurlers.

Flannery's reel [comp. Carl Hession], reel

Flannery's reel [comp. Carl Hession], reel / Carl Hession, piano ; Caoimhe Flannery, fiddle ; Eimhear Flannery, concertina

I wrote this reel for two fantastic young musicians. Caoimhe and Eimhear Flannery who live in Rockchapel. They have already recorded quite a lot of my music and their recordings of my tunes are always so exciting. Eimhear has also recorded one of the songs from The Amhráin Muighe Seóla Collection which was originally sung by my aunt, Maggie Hession.

A granddaughter's dream [comp. Carl Hession], waltz

A granddaughter's dream [comp. Carl Hession], waltz / Eimear Coughlan, harp

I wrote this tune for a very good friend of mine, Manus McGuire when he was recording his first CD Saffron and Blue. Manus and myself were playing concerts in the US with the Moving Cloud Band and we met a friend from Poland, Ben Ruminski. Ben had just become a grandfather and we promised we would record a waltz titled The Granddaughter’s Dream for him.

Morning gallop [comp. Carl Hession], jig

Morning gallop [comp. Carl Hession], jig / Carl Hession, piano ; Francis Cunningham, concertina

This jig came into my head when I was on my way home from the Ballinrobe Races. I was driving up the hill towards the Threadneedle junction when I noticed a white horse in the field on my left having a race with me at the same speed. He continued all the way to the junction and then stopped, as I did, at the traffic lights.

The Letterfrack lassies [comp. Carl Hession], reel

The Letterfrack lassies [comp. Carl Hession], reel / Carl Hession, piano ; Tara Breen, piano

I have always been a big fan of Liz and Yvonne Kane. Their music and playing is superb and I love in particular when they play the music of Paddy Fahy. They live in Letterfrack which is quite close to Clifden.

The rowdy drunk with the whiskey [comp. Carl Hession], jig

The rowdy drunk with the whiskey [comp. Carl Hession], jig / Carl Hession, piano ; Máirtín O'Connor, accordion

This tune is derived from a song written around 1840 by a relation of mine. The song was titled Caismirí an phótaire leis an uisce beathe and tells the story of an argument between the drinker and the whiskey. This song was recorded on the CD Ceol Inné, Ceol Inniu in 1995. After listening to the recording in the studio, Mairtín O’Connor said to me that could be a really nice jig, so we then decided to record it.

About Carl Hession

Carl Hession

Carl Hession is well known as a piano accompanist in traditional music for many years, performing alongside Frankie Gavin, Joe Derrane and The Moving Cloud as well as many others. He is also a composer and orchestral arranger having worked with The Boston Pops, The Dubai Symphony, The Liverpool Philharmonic and next September with The Monaco Philharmonic.

During his lifetime he has spent 35 years teaching music at Coláiste Iognaid in Galway as well as lecturing at NUIG. His father Mike was also a well known traditional musician playing uilleann pipes, fiddle and tin whistle. The Hession house in Salthill was well known for its traditional sessions and people like Willie Clancy, Seamus Ennis, Ted Furey, John Kelly, Leo Rowsome, Joe Burke as well as countless others were regular visitors. From these sessions Carl began to accompany Joe Burke and went on to win The All Ireland Trio with Joe and Kathleen Collins.

After spending most of his early life playing traditional piano he then branched out to both classical and jazz piano. He studied for his ALCM and LLCM with London College of Music and won The William Lloyd Webber gold medal for his LLCM results. He also played jazz piano and recorded with world renowned violinist Stephanie Grapelli and guitarist Louis Stewart. He went on to study for a B.Mus degree in UCC with Professor Fleischmann and in his final year with Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. In the past few years he has composed many tunes in a traditional style as well as writing orchestral classical compositions. In his compositions he delves into the knowledge he has gained from his traditional, classical and jazz experiences.

More of Carl's compositions can be found on his own YouTube channel.
