Photographing the Willie Clancy Summer School

As part of ITMA's contribution to the virtual Willie Clancy Summer School for 2020 we asked 4 photographers to choose their favourite photograph from the festival. Tony Kearns, Nutan, Colm Keating and Peter Laban have each spent many years taking photographs at the festival and are regular visitors to Miltown Malbay.

Nutan

It is often said that a picture says a thousand words..
In stills photography, the picture has to say it all,  in one frame..
Over the years, I have taken thousands of pictures of the Willie week , and ,the one that came to mind is one of my earliest one of Jackie Small teaching the box to kids in Spanish point.
The picture shows very simply how the music is being passed on, which, besides all the craic, is the essence of "the best week, in my year, in my world."

Colm's favourite photograph is of a young piper and whistle player from Rinn, Co. Waterford named Domhnall.

Peter Laban

This photograph is just one of a selection that we received from Peter and features piper Tommy McCarthy playing a tune, watched attentively by his grandson Pádraic Keane.

With hindsight you can read all sorts of things into the image, considering the piper Páraic has become.

A further selection of Peter's photographs are available in the blog Photographs from Peter Laban
