NEW ITMA CHAIRMAN AND BOARD MEMBERSThe Irish Traditional Music Archive is pleased to announce the election as Chairman at its recent AGM of Dermot McLaughlin, Chief Executive, Temple Bar Cultural Trust, Dublin. Dermot McLaughlin, from Derry city, is a highly regarded traditional fiddle player who has made a particular contribution to the current world-wide revival of interest in Donegal fiddle playing. He has performed widely in Ireland and abroad since the 1980s, and contributed as a performer and record producer to several classic albums of the music. He is a writer on and reviewer of traditional music, and a broadcaster especially known as the presenter of the RTÉ series ‘The Raw Bar’. A graduate in Early & Modern Irish and a Foundation Scholar of Trinity College Dublin, he holds an M.Sc. in Organisational Behaviour. He was Traditional Music Officer, Music Officer, Artform Director, and Assistant Director of the Arts Council before taking up his present position in 2003. He has been Chairman of the Dublin International Dance Festival and of the Theatre Shop/ Irish Theatre Institute, a Board member of the Irish Traditional Music Archive, and External Examiner in traditional music performance at the University of Limerick. Dermot succeeds Cathal Goan, Director-General, RTÉ, who has been a long-term Chairman of the ITMA, and who steered it through a crucial period of its development, including especially the acquisition of its new permanent premises and the recent marking of its 21st anniversary. Other Chairmen have been the late Tom Munnelly of the Department of Irish Folklore, University College Dublin; and Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Professor of Music, University of Limerick. New Board members elected for a three-year term are Gay McKeon, CEO of Na Píobairí Uilleann, Dublin; traditional singer Eoiní Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, Cúil Aodha, Co Cork; and Dr Ríonach uí Ógáin, Director, National Folklore Collection, University College Dublin. They replace by rotation fiddle player and radio executive Paddy Glackin, RTÉ; uilleann piper Terry Moylan, archivist of Na Píobairí Uilleann; and traditional singer and teacher Máire Ní Chéileachair of Cork. Other current Board members are Bríd Cranitch, Cork; Dr Matt Cranitch, Cork; Aileen Dillane, Limerick; Dr Caoimhín Mac Aoidh, Donegal; Niall O’Dowd, New York; Liam O’Flynn, Kildare; and Bill Whelan, Galway.
